Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts. (Pro 21:2 NAS)

So the question is how do I deal with a verse like this?  Well, let’s start with some observations:

  1. Just because I think something is right according to me does not mean it is right with God
  2. God measures the heart; the motives by which we live is more important that what we do.
  3. There is a standard for life outside of ourselves.
  4. We are not the final authority on our legacy, God is the one who weighs or examines our heart.
  5. Just because we can fool people with our real motives does not mean they are hidden from God.

Notice the surrounding verses in Proverbs 20:27-21:6:

27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, Searching all the innermost parts of his being. 28 Loyalty and truth preserve the king, And he upholds his throne by righteousness. 29 The glory of young men is their strength, And the honor of old men is their gray hair. 30 Stripes that wound scour away evil, And strokes reach the innermost parts. 21:1 The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD; He turns it wherever He wishes. 2 Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts. 3 To do righteousness and justice Is desired by the LORD rather than sacrifice. 4 Haughty eyes and a proud heart, The lamp of the wicked, is sin. 5 The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage, But everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty. 6 The getting of treasures by a lying tongue Is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death.

  • While our “spirit” and our “heart” may not be exactly the same thing (moot point) it is clear this is the inner-self where our feelings, thoughts, musing and ideas formulate. This inner life can be very hidden from others but crystal clear with God. (20:27)
  • God desires loyalty, truth, and righteousness to be the resident guardians of our inner life. (20:28)
  • Loyalty to God, truth, and righteousness are especially critical for leaders (kings). (20:28)
  • Human beings find much glory in external things (strength; the experience of a long life) but the real measure of a person comes from discipline that protects the inner life from evil. In other words just because we are strong (or athletic), or have experience, does not mean we are godly.
  • While we think we are independent and, at times invincible, God is at work influencing the movement and decisions of leaders to fulfill His purpose. At the same time God allows us the freedom to make choices that we will be held accountable for. (21:1-2)
  • God is concerned that our heart is driven by righteousness and not pride and arrogance. (21:4-6)
  • Our choices in life may bring their own consequences and at the same time fulfill the purpose of God in the messiness of life. (21:1-6)
